Description of the 40 Day Prayer Campaign

In the spring of 2009, an idea was proposed to a group of young United Methodist leaders who hope to aid in the renewal of The United Methodist Church. Quite simply, the idea was to turn to God in prayer. Beginning May 18, 40 young United Methodist leaders will lend their voice to a collaborative prayer effort for The United Methodist Church. Each day one prayer will be published to this website that has been written by a young leader serving The United Methodist Church. You are invited to join us on our journey.

Interestingly, this project was born through social media. Many of us are yet to meet face to face. Blogs, Facebook, Twitter, and other forums have helped us to band together, discuss ideas, learn about ministry in other places, pray for one another, and share in the work of the ministry. The idea that young United Methodist leaders should join together in prayer was proposed via a blog. In the weeks that followed the initial proposal, over 50 people responded willing to pray or to provide a written prayer for this campaign. Respondents represent 22 different annual conferences within United Methodism. This group is geographically and theologically diverse, yet we are united by our love for Jesus Christ and the mission and ministry of The United Methodist Church.

All participants in this effort have invited two others from their networks to join alongside them in praying for softened hearts, sensitivity to God's leading, and discernment for how The United Methodist Church can best be in ministry with and for all people. Others are welcome to walk with us.

We pray that our efforts will lead to a healthier and more vibrant church, the strengthening of our witness to the gospel of and about Jesus Christ, and a more hopeful tomorrow. Join us in prayer, and then join us in the work of making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Glory be to God in the highest.

Thank You
Day 40 :: June 26, 2009

Holy & Gracious God,

Only through you will the world know a hope that changes everything.

Day 39 :: June 25, 2009

Lord of all creation,

You hold all things in your hands.

Day 38 :: June 24, 2009

God of the future,
you who holds infinite possibilities,
who calls us out of complacency and into action,

Day 37 :: June 23, 2009

Our God: the Father, Son and Holy Spirit,

We are in continual awe of the mystery of your unity.  While we constantly play with analogies to grasp how three can be one, and one can be three, you live in the glorious existence of unity.  To you, our Triune God, we pray for your guidance today.

Though we are many, you have called us to be your one body.  You have called us to be your very hands, feet, eyes, and ears for the world.

Day 36 :: June 22, 2009

Holy and Living God:

You have called your people throughout the ages to be a city on a hill, a light unto the nations.

Day 35 :: June 21, 2009

God, you are the God who loves outrageously.

We see in creation the mark of your extravagant love from the very beginning of time; we see in the history of your people a God who gives endlessly; in the person of Jesus we witness your passionate, self-giving love.

Unite our hearts with yours, so that we may learn to live at peace and in love with our neighbors.

Day 34 :: June 20, 2009

Most Merciful God:

Day 33 :: June 19, 2009

Almighty God -

Thank you for all your many blessings.

Day 32 :: June 18, 2009

God of grace,

As we walk our path of communal faith,

Day 31 :: June 17, 2009

Almighty and gracious God,

You have placed a call upon each of our lives.

Day 30 :: June 16, 2009

O Lord, Our God,
We come to you as your children
            Seeking your will,

Day 29 :: June 15, 2009

God in whom we live, and move, and have our being:

You have sought us out to partner with you for your work of redeeming your Creation.

Day 28 :: June 14, 2009

We now venture forth on the final stage of our journey: Union.  We now name specific ways that our life of union with God might play out in our communities.  In order to partner with the broader vision of The United Methodist Church, we specifically name: 1) the birth of new churches and the revitalization of existing churches, 2) leadership development; 3) combating the diseases of poverty by contributing to global health; and 4) engaging in ministry with the poor.  Here we pray for where our union with God might lead us.

Day 27 :: June 13, 2009

Our Lord and our God,
The One who makes all things new
In You alone we seek guidance

A New Prayer for Illumination

Lord,

Day 25 :: June 11, 2009

Light of the World,

You entered our darkness and became the great light.

Day 24 :: June 10, 2009

We were taught to pray: “Thy Kingdom come.”
Why would we be taught to pray that unless the Kingdom might come?
And did our Lord have more in mind for us in that request?
